June in the garden

Pinch out tomatoes.

With upright varieties of tomatoes, it is essential to remove all new side shoots as the plant grows.

How do you spot a side shoot? Look at the plant’s main stem, and where the branches grow, any little shoot appearing at the junction of the upright stem, at right angles with the branch is a side shoot.

Why do you need to do this? Side shoots must be removed because tomato plants grow very vigorously. They will grow upwards, but they will also grow many side shoots and become a tangled mass of leaves. By restricting growth, the plants will produce more fruits.

Simply pinch out the leaves using the thumb and forefinger.

Throughout the growing season, the plant will continue to produce side so you will need to keep removing them.
