Abundant Borders Launches Food Project
At noon on Tuesday 10th January 2017 the charity Abundant Borders will launch its innovative food project.
Bringing together skilled trainers, volunteers and trainees from across the Borders, the project aims to teach participants the basics of good food, how to grow fruit salads and vegetables for yourself, and the art of cooking simple nutritious and tasy meals. The launch takes place at Splash on Eyemouth Harbour.
Administrator Anne Casey said: “We are delighted to receive initial funding from the Scottish Government’s Fair Food Fund. This has enabled us to start a pilot scheme in Berwickshire. Local groups have done a great job in helping us connect with a range of people who would love to access better quality food and develop their abilities and knowledge in building their own self-reliance.
“We especially appreciate the support of Berwickshire Housing Association in providing land for growing on and their recognition of the opportunity to add to the resources they offer the community they serve. In addition, we have been working closely with statutory and voluntary organisations who have been supportive by providing us with premises, signposting us to people who are interested in the training provided by Abundant Borders and possibly helping us to deliver some of the training.”
Trustee Steve Allen said: I was delighted to be asked to oversee this vital work. In retirement I find myself drawn to making the most of my garden (something that was difficult during a very busy working life) and I’d love to help others share the benefits in a companionable way.”
Author and trainer Graham Bell said; “We use the principles of People Care, Earth Care and Fair Shares in our work. This project exemplifies how people can advance their own health, wealth and happiness with a little help from friends.”
The launch welcomes visitors from 10-4 at the venue and the media are welcome during that time. The formal launch will take place at 12noon, and interviews with the charity team and participants will be possible at that time.
